Best Grout Cleaning Methods

November 12, 2020 / Michelle Tran / Cleaning Tips

Showers and tubs see daily use, and as a result, the grout around the tiles will need a good scrubbing. If the grout is not routinely cleaned, it begins collecting a nasty film and build up of slime, dirt, or grime. It needs to be scrubbed fairly regularly to keep it from becoming stained and irksome.

It’s easy cleaning and scrubbing the grout out in your shower, even though it can take a bit of time to complete the task. The length of time required will depend on the size of the tiles, how many there are, and the size of the shower.

The Tools and Supplies

You don’t need expensive, fancy tools to scrub your grout. They’re things you probably already have around your home or are easy to pick up at a local grocery store.

· A tile brush

· A small, old toothbrush

· A natural, all-purpose cleaner and baking soda

· A cup to rinse the grout and tiles

· A squeegee to dry off the tiles after rinsing

Spray the grout in your shower generously with the all-purpose cleaner. As always, we recommend using a natural, all green cleaner. This is especially important in bathrooms where the space may be smaller and there is less ventilation. Breathing in too many fumes from chemical cleaners can be a health hazard. Once you’ve sprayed the grout, let it soak in for several minutes. This will make it easier to scrub.

Once you’ve allowed the cleaner to soak into the grout, take the tile brush and begin scrubbing the grout. Scrub with enough pressure to really get in there and work up the grime. It’s a good idea to scrub from one side to the other, top to bottom. This helps insure that you’ve scrubbed all the grout in the shower or tub. If the grime seems to be a little bit more stubborn, use the baking soda as safe scrubbing agent, and use the old toothbrush to really get into the small crevices. Keep in mind that grout is a porous material, and some staining from previous grime may be permanent.

Rinse the grout thoroughly once you’ve completely cleaned the grout to your satisfaction. Be sure to wash away the loose baking soda and grime. Then, quickly squeegee the tiles dry.Spotless, grime free grout is an easy achievement. If your schedule is full, call Maid to Shine for a professional, complete home clean. We’ll be delighted to assist you with your cleaning needs!
